Riding High For The Week

April

I have taken short trips out of my diabetic comfort zone before. A drive out of town for the day or an overnight at a friend’s place… But now it’s here

Spring Break

The time to take my mind off of school, responsibilities, chronic diseases. Stop, back up one, and revise. Instead of removing stress from common life, I found myself replacing it with the worry of extended traveling with diabetes. Nearly 1,000 miles away that is.

My roommate and I headed to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. snow haven of the Rocky Mountains and world renowned.

The plan was 5days / 4nights in jackson with roughly 30 hours of driving bookending the whole thing. With the whole range of weather, beautiful sights, down to exploring the city, it was an overall success.

I must say I was a tad concerned before I left. Visiting my parents frequently at their high altitude home has caused me more lows than normal. Chalk it up to one of those things diabetics discover now and then about how their body reacts to varying stimulus. At 10,000 ft. up while in Jackson, I feared repeats.

Ever vigilant and over preparedI kept acute awareness of how I “felt” and what my readings were. Needless to say, lots of sugary carbs were ever present. At one point I counted over 320 grams of carbs in the backpack I wore while on the slopes. Caused by rapidly stuffing misc. snacks into the bag, and a little by paranoia also. I was determined to be PREPARED. Testing kit with all the staples, insulin pen with numerous needles, informed riding partner. Check, check, and Check!

Happily reporting no lows and loads of fun on the hills!

Thank you Jelly Belly Sport Beans for having my back.
