San Diego Fires Hit Close to Home

October

SD Fires

The wildfires here in San Diego county and surrounding continue to burn, causing a paramount number of evacuees and loss of property. Schools and universities have been closed along with many businesses. My work closed early on Tuesday (10/23/07) and, by decree of the district manager, was also closed all day today. We donated an entire days order or pastries and breakfast sandwiches to locals in need as well as a heap of brewed coffee.

The nonstop news coverage sheds a positive light on some aspects of the fires. Citizens are starting to be allowed to return to their property and Santa Ana winds have finally started to slow their taunting breeze. All is safe in my particular neck of the woods. Aside from heavy smoke at some times in the day, all I have to worry about is the other San Diegans that are displaced and in need. Federal aid is coming as quickly as beaurocrats can sign off on paperwork. The Governator also talked with President Bush and he is sheduled to make a visit some time tomorrow.

Fires are likely to be completely smothered when they run out of fuel or hit the ocean, like parts have done already. We can only hope ground crews along with fire fighting air support can make a bigger dent as the hours go by.

My best to all affected.
